Eating Well June 2008

My newest magazine is called Eating Well and has a picture of peas on the front.  Right away before you even turn the first page, that’s a big plus.  It’s pea pickin’ season and we love, love, love fresh peas.  Eating Well, is a beautiful magazine, even their advertisements are nice to read.  It’s full of flavorful, but delicious looking recipes.  Peas are big in the June issue, but it has recipes for other foods as well, like strawberry and rhubarb in Duck and Strawberry Salad with Rhubarb dressing.  Interviews with specialists on health and nutrition are here too.  There’s a special report featuring Dr Philip Ades, MD.  He wants to help you reduce your risk for heart disease by changing the way you eat.  The report even includes heart healthier recipes such as Grilled Tuna with Olive Relish, yum and dessert - Lemon Poppy Seed Cake.

The magazine contains recipes having to do with the season, including strawberry recipes and different burger recipes.  The pictures to go with the recipes are so mouth watering. One article tells you all about the foods from Denmark and gives us a peek at some of their recipes. There’s a demonstration of how to roast your own peppers - with these pictures you could definitely do it.  The only negative is that for those people who love contests, the cookie contest was over on June 2.  Maybe next year you can enter your recipe for your favorite cookie.  In the meantime, I think I will pick some peas to use in a new recipe…

He Said Beer She Said Wine by Sam Calagione and Marnie Old

In Book/Magazine Review on April 15th, 2008

he said beer

A sommelier and a brewer team up to give you an in-depth food paring insights for wine and beer.  Contains "wine versus beer" dinner party recipes, complete with wine and beer recommendations, so you can ger your friends involved in the debate at home.

Sam Calagione is the founder of Dogfish Head brewery and Marnie Old is a very well-known sommelier.  The delve into the depths of their respective potent potables in a Sam Malone/Diane Chambers style.

The book is breezy and both authors know what they are talking about.  It’s broken up into five sections:

  • The Great Divide:  an introduction and a debate
  • Wine Primer:  basics about wine
  • Beer Basics:  a primer about beer
  • The Food Debate: about beer, wine and food pairings
  • The Great Debate at Home:  how to host a beer versus wine party

I happen to like beer and I happen to like wine, so I’m not one of those either/or kinda guys.  Generally beer is not served at dinner parties, so  providing the information of what beer goes with what food is the best feature of the book.  There are a brazilian books about wine and what goes with what.  What makes this book unique is the approach of serving both and letting your guests pick what they’d want to drink.  It also provides a fun and interesting way to get beer slobs aficionados to try a glass of wine and wine snobs connoisseurs to try a pint of ale.

If you like to host dinner parties — and I know you do — then this is a book you should add to your kitchen library.

The complete whole grains cookbook

What’s for dinner?   Burgers.

Yeah, what’s in it?  Millet.

No meat?   No, it has millet.

So they’re birdseed burgers.

No, it’s not birdseed.

Is millet in birdseed?

I think so.

They’re birdseed burgers.

Okay, I wasn’t an enlightened teenager, I just wanted regular burgers. I don’t think any of us made it easy on my father to incorporate whole grains into our meals. Truthfully, though those burgers weren’t great, they were pretty dry and not my idea of great food.

Clean Eating Magazine
I found this new magazine in the store the other day.  I’m a food magazine addict.  Even though I have quite a few magazines and recipe books, I’m always looking for new ideas to use in my cooking.  Clean Eating Magazine is a brand new (okay second issue is out now) magazine put out by the publishers of Oxygen.  I’m very pleased with this new mag.  I want to work more on cooking foods that are healthy and clean without a lot of fats and sauces.  The magazine addresses cooking with whole grains, different fruits and vegetables, plus plenty of salads and family dinner type meals.
