Dunkin Donuts Coffee vs. Starbucks Coffee

 Dunkin Donuts Coffee

I’m a simple girl. I don’t spend much money on myself and it doesn’t take much to make me happy. My favorite times are spent hiking on the weekends with my family or having a movie or reading night at home. So when I received a case of Dunkin Donuts packaged coffee in the mail it was a real treat. You see, Dunkin Donuts is my favorite coffee ever. It’s like Christmas came early.

So just after receiving my case of packaged coffee (Two giant thumbs up for the Cinnamon Spice, by the way) I saw a commercial about how more people prefer the taste of Dunkin Donuts coffee to that of Starbucks. It took me less than 30 seconds to agree. Now, don’t get me wrong because I do love me some white chocolate mocha, and I actually spend more time at Starbucks because it’s closer, but if I had to choose, it would be Dunkin Donuts all the way.

I remember when I lived in my first apartment in Middle Village, Queens, NYC (this was in the mid to late 80′s). There was a Dunkin Donuts a little more than half mile away on Woodhaven Boulevard. Every Sunday I would pick up a newspaper a couple of large Dunkin Donuts coffee, and a warm, freshly baked bagel or roll from the bakery across the street from my apartment. Now that’s comfort food.

See? Simple pleasures. I wasn’t married, didn’t have any obligations except to myself, and couldn’t afford to go out on a regular basis like many of my 20-somthing counterparts.  Even so, $5 for a Sunday paper with all the fixings was a worthy splurge.

Every cup of Dunkin Donuts brings me back to that time.  Maybe that’s the reason behind my preference and the reason I feel a good cup of coffee should be enjoyed and savored, not gulped.

Speaking of savoring,  I had the pleasure of trying the new packaged Dunkin Dark coffee, a rich flavorful roast. This is what coffee is all about. It’s not flavored or sweetened, just everything you’d expect from a gourmet cup of coffee – but at a reasonable price. Starbucks is good, don’t get me wrong, but Dunkin Donuts has kept the tradition going for me for over 20 years and I don’t plan on stopping any time soon. And why should I when I can now buy the packaged coffee at my supermarket?

What’s your preference?

I have to say that in a contest between Starbucks and DD, I would go with Starbucks but in a perfect world, I would be drinking gallons of Green Mountain Coffee – that’s my favorite hands down. Especially the pumpkin spice. :)

I’m still waiting for Dunkin’ to open here in China. I’ve heard rumors that they’re opening in Shanghai, but that’s not close enough for me. I don’t mind Starbucks much anymore, but I’ll usually try the Colombian coffee shop nearby instead–mostly because it’s quieter.

Starbucks – Carmel Macchiato is my favorite, but it’s so calorie laden. At work I get starbucks because the next brand is much much weaker. I use skim milk and splenda though, because I realized that the cream and sugar packs the pounds on. So I only get the CM after church as a treat. Tell me, does DD make something similar?

Dunkin Donuts has flavored coffees and Coolatas. I don’t get the White Chocolate Mocha’s too often either because of the calories – I like a regular cup of coffee too.

Okay, from the store, when I buy, it’s usually Green Mountain or Newman’s. I haven’t seen Joffrey’s in the store, so that you have to order online. I really try to buy fair trade and organic coffees.

We have had coolatas on the turnpike when visiting mom, even my husband likes those and he’s not a coffee drinker. That is a treat sometimes too.

    Hey everyone,

Deb, let me start off by saying that I’m happy Dunkin’ Donuts coffee has been such a part of your life. We love hearing things like that. Second, I agree with your “two thumbs up” for Cinnamon Spice! Third, I really appreciate you taking the time to mention our taste test victory over Starbucks. It is certainly something that we are all very proud of. If any of your readers are interested, more information on the taste test can be found on http://www.dunkinbeatstarbucks.com.

Thanks everyone, and stay warm! (It’s getting cold here in the Northeast.)
