New Things I’ve Done This Year Pertaining to Cooking

Written by Diana - April 13, 2008 4 Comments

Network Blogging Tips is having a list contest.

Here’s my list.

Seven new things I’ve done this year pertaining to cooking:

  1. I am blogging about cooking.
  2. I used a new grain for the first time that I’ve never even heard of before – quinoa.
  3. I made risotto – once I saw it done on the web, I tried it. You have to stand around the stove, but it’s delicious.
  4. I made my own humus because I decided it was too expensive for the list of ingredients involved. I won’t buy it again, it’s too easy to make.
  5. I turned over more cooking to my kids a couple of times a week since they are teens and I commute almost every day.
  6. I started bringing my lunch to work to save money.
  7. I am putting recipes on other blogs to try to win contests.  I won once, and I’m not a really lucky person.

What new things have you done this year pertaining to cooking? Or what new thing would you most like to try.  Let us know in the comments.

I’m so glad you tried the quinoa! Did you like it? I have it at least once a week and I’m sure I’ll be using it in grain salads this summer. Homemade hummus is great! The hard part is finding tahini in the grocery store. ;-)

Let’s see, this year I’ve…tried vegan baking, learned how to bake (cornbread so far) in a cast iron skillet, and made a dedicated effort to eat seasonal, organic produce. I’ve always loved the farmers’ market but they close in the winters so that’s been the hard part. And last, I stopped caring about proper foodie rules (such as making dressings from scratch and using dried beans), I just go by taste rather than concept. I’d rather spend time eating than cooking!

    2. Began experimenting more in the kitchen instead of sticking to the recipe.
    3. Started my own food blog instead of adhering to the rules of someone else’s.
    4. Got my sister and some friends into blogging about food.

By the way, I also made hummus for the first time this year and It’s so much more delicious than the stuff found at the grocery store. My mother and her friend couldn’t get enough of it. It’s easy to make – and yes – not easy to find Tahini at the supermarket. (Hint: ethnic foods section where the Thai, Indian, Chinese and other Asian foods are stored.
