Fun Cool Dish Ideas To Make For A Summer Gathering

Summer is settling in and we’ve been experiencing the heat ahead of this first summer day. We all have days where you don’t want to turn on the oven – actually my oven is unused quite a bit in the summer, and instead make salads, grill out, do a lot of drinking and try to keep the heat out of the kitchen as best we are able. Here is a round up of Cookerati’s past posts that deal with cooking, entertaining and celebrating in the summer heat.
Enjoy!
First – we should start with Deb’s suggestions in Ten Things to Eat or Drink to Keep Cool on a Hot Summer Day.
No gathering is complete without deviled eggs.
If you are having a big celebration – I wrote this after my son’s birthday/graduation celebration that went off splendidly and it was 90 degrees out. – The Workings of a Successful Outdoor Summer Party.
Since it’s berry season, here are a few of our favorite berry dishes:
- Quinoa Berry Salad
- Berry Tossed Salad
- Stawberry Pie (no no baking if you use a prebaked pie shell – go ahead and cheat in the heat)
- Melon and Blackberry Fruit Salad - perfect with some mint simple syrup
Grilling – one of our favorite ways to keep the kitchen cool:
Salads – my family loves salads – they keep you cool, and can be either a side or main dish.
- Deb’s Four Top Salad Fails – don’t do these please.
- Cucumber Fennel Salad
- Grilled Turkey and Avocado Salad
- Orzo Asparagus and Garlic scapes in a garlic scape pesto – I won the culinary smackdown with this one.
Dips & Salsas -
- Robin’s Tangy Buttermilk Dressing – great for dipping your fresh veggies in.
- Corn Salsa
- Tomatillos To Salsa Verde – We love using our home grown tomatillos in salsa.
- Hummus Made with Fresh English Peas – Peas are in season right now.
We have a lot more than I’ve pulled out, but these are some of my favorites. Hopefully you can find something great to bring to your next gathering.
