Holiday Gift Guide: Certified Humane Beef – and Win a Sampler Too!

When the Meyer Natural Angus people contacted me and asked if I’d like to try and give away a sampler of their Certified Humane Angus Beef, I was intrigued. “Certified Humane” sounds like something I should know about – and something I’d approve of.

Indeed it is…

To quote the Humane Farm Animal Care Website:

The Certified Humane Raised and Handled program is the only farm animal welfare and food labeling program in the U.S. dedicated to improving the welfare of farm animals from birth through slaughter for the 10 billion farm animals raised for food each year.

I’m all for that. I’m not a vegetarian, I do enjoy a nice steak or even some chicken. However, I do believe in treating our animal friends with respect and dignity and not tending to them in an inhumane manner simply because they’re being raised for food.

What does it mean when meat or poultry is Certified Humane?

It means the animals have a good life. They are raised to enjoy life on green pastures and not in slaughter houses. It means they aren’t injected with chemicals or hormones and that they’re not subjected to pain. They’re raised with resting spots, shelter and in a loving environment.

The Meyer Natural Angus beef isn’t only cruelty free, it’s darn good. Mr. Ng loves nothing mre than to grill up a steak on the weekend and is very vocal to cuts of meat that don’t live up to their packing. We enjoyed the sampler the Meyer Natural Angus company so generously provided for the purpose of this review. We didn’t marinade or cover the beef with overpowering rubs. We used some salt and pepper and charred it to perefection. People, this is the real deal.

I would give the filet mignon to my mother. She is disabled and worries about her income so she never treats herself to any really nice dinners… The other two gifts (if I could afford it) would be two of the Angus Jr. Samplers. These I would give to the Human Development Committee at our church to donate to families in need.

I would choose the BBQ Party Pack for my friend Sarah, who loves BBQ and is from Memphis (although I think she has said she only considers pork for bbq, and that using beef is a Texas thing — not sure?); I would choose the Steakhouse Sampler for my parents, as there are two of each item; I’d choose the Family of Four Picnic Pack for my sister, her husband and their son — it would give them some leftovers. Everything, of course, looks wonderful.

The New York Strip is my personal favorite cut so I would get the 4 (8 oz) USDA Prime New York Strip Steaks for me and my family. My Uncle Gary has a birthday in January and he is a foodie so I would get him the Happy Birthday Gift Pack. Finally, I would get the Filet Mignon Sampler for my parents since that is their favorite cut, but I would invite them to our home and Hubby would cook it for them (and us) since he is such a good griller and this is more reasonably priced than taking them to an expensive steak house around here.

I would pick 1 each of the Rib Eye, the Top Sirloin, and the New York Strip samplers, and give them to my daughters–probably wouldn’t matter which of them received which sampler, since I suspect the beef would be a real treat for all of them. I’d give the 2 (10oz) USDA Prime Ribeye Steaks to my parents. They love steak but can’t eat a lot of it so they’d get two dinners and two breakfasts out of it. See? Not expensive at all!

I’d like to be able to send the Meyer Natural Angus Sampler to my son and daughter-in-law, who left today for a 2-year stint on the USAF base in Turkey. Alas, Meyer can’t deliver there so perhaps I’d have to send it to myself.

And finally, I’d love to send the Thank You Gift Pack to the young man who does all the dirty jobs for our little mountain town. Today it took him only 15 minutes to get to the place where a tree fell in the road, and another 15 minutes to clean it up – it looked like it never happened. He’s not appreciated enough for all he does here.
