Holiday Gift Guide: The Flavor Bible
It’s no secret I love to play around in the kitchen. If there’s one way I’m challenged, it’s probably knowing which flavors blend best with each other. That’s why I’m digging The Flavor Bible.
As you would probably gather from the title, The Flavor Bible is a reference listing tons of different foods, herbs and spices and everything you want to know about them but were afraid to ask. Each item lists what that food tastes like, it’s weight, volume, other foods they go well with, tips and techniques for cooking and even the different varieties.
Let’s take cheese, for example. When I open the Flavor Bible to the “cheese” section, I learn the flavor is “sweet-sour”, it goes well with apples, breads, celery (especially as a dip), and other fruits and nuts. The authors also go into detailed description as to what cheeses go best with what breads and fruits and we also read quotes from notable foodies.
The Flavor Bible was written by Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg who also wrote the handy What to Eat with What to Drink. I recommend it for the foodie in your life. Already my pages are marked and dog-earned and I know I’ll be using this for years to come. Don’t buy another sweater for your favorite cook, The Flavor Bible is a much better investment.
Two giant and enthusiastic Cookerati thumbs up.
