Produce Bags, the Next Step For Me & ChicoBag Has Them

Written by Diana - May 24, 2010 4 Comments

I’ve been to this step before in the farm markets. I tell them to just put the produce in my reusable sack.  That’s easy with the farm markets, since you are going from stand to stand.  They aren’t the best for storage though.  ChicoBag makes a Produce stand pack that is great and you can use them in the store shopping cart because your veggies won’t dump out.  I am trying my Produce Stand Collection right now.  I did get incredulous looks from the clerks when they picked up the bags full of fruit and veggies because they weren’t packed in the stores plastic bags.  ChicoBag Produce Stand Collection is meant to replace those plastic bags you pack your fresh produce in that you pick up off the vegetable stands in grocery store.

The new collection offers three different bags, each constructed from a different fabric designed to optimize freshness. The Hemp-Cotton blend is perfect for leafy greens, grains and green beans. The rePETe™ Mesh is great for apples, orange and potatoes. The rePETe™ will keep your squash, broccoli and carrots fresh. All bags stuff into an apple pouch when not in use, making them easy to carry and store.

Actually, ChicoBag I have a use for that fourth bag.  The apple pouch itself that you store the other bags in, is the perfect size to put your garlic into.  I told the clerk who gave me the look that this is the next step, produce bags to replace those plastic ones in the store.  He said,”Good Idea!” and they packed my bags of produce into my reusables.  At home, I place the bags with the veggies straight into the veggie drawer.  Works like a charm.

The only drawback is that you don’t throw the bag away if the veggies go bad, but that’s what it’s all about.  Instead of throwing away, we’re cleaning up and reusing.  It’s the next step in the process of figuring out what we can do to keep the environment clean.

ChicoBag wants to help a few people to make that next step.  They’re holding a Contest on ChicoBag and giving away a Produce Stand Collection to ten winners.

Interesting, I’ve been looking for something like this because I feel so guilty when I use tons of plastic bags at the grocery store. Thanks for sharing!

So I had not heard about this little produce pack in the cute lil’ apple. Hmmmm. I’ll have to link to you. Totally cute. I’ve been using produce bags for years, but just basic like recycled cotton and mesh. Oddly clerks get way more upset about these then they do general reusable bags. Also, one major issue we’ve had is that because the produce is already in a cloth bag the clerk will leave the bag out of our reusable grocery bags and then we end up leaving produce at the store and having to go back. Annoying! They put plastic produce bags in bigger bags – but forget the cloth. Ok rant over. I’ll have to check these out. Cool post.
