Table Settings – New Dishware on the Cheap

Written by Diana - January 3, 2009 6 Comments

College Girls plates I shop for my every day dishes at a thrift store.  They get chipped or dropped or left at people’s houses so I want inexpensive.  I don’t need mugs or saucers, usually I shop for plates and bowls.  Thrift stores have dishes for as low as .50 – 1.00 for the plain white ones.  My daughter went with me on my last foray and found some cute things for a little bit more. Since she is in a dorm, she only needs a mug, a plate and a nice size bowl.  She does already have one of each, however, when she saw these she begged me to buy them.  Each piece was under 2.00, so I said sure and got her these beautiful dishes.  A nice matching green bowl and mug, plus a deep brown square plate.  Thrift stores get over stock or stock that is running out and won’t be replaced.  Some of it is really really nice and worth much more than you pay for it.  So when my daughter goes back to school, she’ll have a new place setting for herself and me I get to keep my wallet pretty much intact.

The daughter and I are HUGE fans of the thrift store! She has basically furnished her apartment and equipped her kitchen with either thrift store finds or things we gave her (she got a LOT from us when we moved to South America). All her dishes were picked up at various Goodwills. She got an almost compete set that are sold through Pier One Imports, for a mere fraction of the cost. She loves those finds!

I’ve gotten pretty platters from thrift stores. Every time I visit Good Will or salvation army, I’m always checking out dishes, and platters. Lots of good stuff for the cheap.

What a great deal you got. Love those colors. The brown looked like dark purple to me and I thought it was a nice combo. I love different plates, bowls and mugs and stuff. Hubs and I found a lot of fun stuff on sale a while back at our grocery store and grabbed them up. Now I can’t wait to hit the thrift shop in town. Thanks!

Actually, they’re all a deeper hue than they appear, but they are lovely. My cabinets are so small, that I have to keep everything as uniform as I can get it. I stick with the basics, but she can have a little fun with hers.

I’m always looking for glass casserole pans when I go. I also found a glass coffee carafe for the drip coffee maker. It’s not a perfect fit, but it works great. I didn’t want to pay 15.00 when I could pay 1.00 for something that worked for me.
