North Market- Farmer’s Market
July 2, 2011 | by Diana
These photos don’t do justice to the vendors. My camera phone was on video, and so I have half second videos but not photos, drat. There were lots of nice vendors at North Market though some had packed up by the time we arrived – maybe because of the rain. Athens Market beats them in the grain department, and variety, but still North Market has plenty of veggies, Oink Moo Cluck brought the home grown meat (we bought chicken). There were a couple of cheese places – I got feta for my salads, and my husband wanted the chipotle – which my daughter thinks will go well in her mexi-salad (along with the chorizo from Blues Creek inside the market). My husband found some great looking carrots too. We visited with Isaac from Honey Run Farm, he has awesome smelling soap – I love, love, love the mint smelling soap. We picked up soap and honey from him. Someday my husband wants to start his own beehives, but we’re still in the thinking about it stage.
My husband suggested …
A Night Out on the Patio
May 26, 2011 | by Diana
Lately we’ve been living in the lap of luxury with my daughter cooking dinner almost every night, and eating out on the deck. Tonight however, she had a date night – kind of, dinner with her boyfriend’s family. Since the pets were going to be taken care of ahead of time, that meant dinner out with my husband. I did have another agenda – picking up steaks for Memorial Day weekend and we were low on veggies, so a stop at the Greener Grocer.
This Wednesday was a fun night at North Market because on the patio they had some live entertainment – as well as some local beer. Dinner – was of course from one of my favorite North Market Stalls – Firdous Express. My husband and I have gotten lunch here quite a few times and the food is scrumptious. We both had lamb roast dinner, which comes with rice, Greek side salad and some pita bread. I had bright yellow saffron rice, while my husband …
The Source by Wasserstrom in North Market
April 13, 2011 | by Diana
I’m sure I’ve told you that the North Market isn’t just food, but Saturday the Source was a treasure trove for me. The source is an outlet stall for Wasserstrom Restaurant Supply Goods. These items are quality goods, but maybe there’s only one of them. The clearance rack was stacked with really nice pieces, mostly one plate, or one cup or one bowl of a certain type, but just was a foodie needs – or a college kid if you live in a house with 4 other girls like my daughter. I made two trips to the counter with things I thought would highlight my food nicely. As a food blogger, it can be money intensive to find the right plates and bowls that draw your eye to the food, without distracting from it. So one white coffee cup, or plate, or bowl even mismatched is a great deal.
The lady at the counter was really helpful, and told me that the cup I bought for 1.00 was a Rosenthal worth much more, but since there wasn’t a …
Lamb Cutting 101 Class with Bluescreek Farm Meats
March 11, 2011 | by DianaLast week was my birthday, but my college kids who are away at school weren’t here. My daughter said she didn’t have money, but she would give me time during her spring break and we would do whatever I wanted. When I asked if she wanted to take a Lamb Cutting Class – she asked – as in food? I replied in the affirmative and she agreed, though since only one of us would be participating in the trimming the rack of lamb, she did ask if she should bring a book to read because she wasn’t sure it would be all that interesting. No book reading involved – except the copy of their Bluescreek Recipes for 2010 that we received. This class was fun, informative and delicious.
David and Cheryl Smith own Bluescreek Farm and also Bluescreek Farm Meats stall in the North Market. They told us they don’t have a factory farm, they still raise their animals the same way their grandparents did without growth hormones and antibiotics . The class was held on a …
Fantastic, Fabulous, Wonderful Fifty – How Do You Celebrate?
March 4, 2011 | by DianaMy birthday was Tuesday and it was a fabulous day. My husband and I have a deal. We take each other’s birthday and our anniversary off to do whatever we want. When the kids were young, we used it as a reconnect day and if it fell on a weekend, we took a weekday off instead. Our biggest rule is no chores. The house could fall down around us, but we ignore. Yesterday I got to choose what I wanted to do – and my husband went along for the ride. He’s such a great guy. The weather was fabulous, and perfect for spending the day together. First on our list – my husband mentioned North Market and I agreed wholeheartedly.
His plan – to sneak off and pick me up a box of chocolates from the Pure Imagination Chocolatier while I stopped off at the Greener Grocer for some veggies, grains and …
Foodie Christmas Shopping – North Market and Middle West Spirits
December 19, 2010 | by DianaMy husband and I went shopping for Christmas gifts for his family and ours, but we’re not fond of the crowded shopping Christmas season. Today I said I want to go out and hit the North Market first. I wanted to try and find some special gifts for my in-laws when we are together for Christmas Day.
This year, there’s a spice guy at the North Market in a new North Market Spices stall. He has jars of spices, and has portioned out bags of ground spices 2 oz, 4 oz, etc. The colors of these spices are so bright and beautiful. I bought a special bag for each of my nieces, my mother, mother in law and sister in law. He also has his own cocoa mix, plus some really cool things like whole star anise, vanilla bean and his own special blends. The guy with the guitar next the spice stall singing Christmas music (and going off the Christmas agenda when requested) sounded really nice. Who was he?
We walked over to jeni’s, had a few samples and bought a cone each. I had …
Easter Kolbasz – from Best of the Wurst in the North Market
April 8, 2010 | by Diana
Last year my sister and I discussed Easter Kolbasz, and our family traditions. This year when browsing through North Market in Columbus, Oh, purchasing my Easter Leg of Lamb from Blues Creek Farm Market, I perused the selections at Best of the Wurst. When I had my tour of the North Market, I mentioned to Dave that it would be wonderful if they could get some Hungarian Kolbasz for sale in the market, so that I could have it for my Easter dinner. There in the front window of the Best of the Wurst Market stall was hungarian sausage. Could it be? Was it the good stuff from my childhood? I bought one package with the idea that if it was good, I would be going back for more later. Later, I opened the package, and it was good, really good, much better than the other stuff, though a little drier and less greasy than the ones …
Date night with Dine Originals Chef Series Class
April 2, 2010 | by DianaLast night we decided to try out the Dine Originals Chef Series at North Market, alone without any kids – that qualifies as a date right? Chef Matt Prokopchak set up a menu consisting of Campanian Easter Bread, Roman Lamb and Potatoes and Traveling Italian Lime and Coconut Cheesecake with a Cookie Crust( the original said cashew, but he had cookies in front of us). It’s like watching a cooking show while eating. My husband after we were seated and drinking a glass of wine (I don’t think the wine’s important to the point but may be), Chef Matt added some wine to the lamb roast already in the oven, and my husband realizing dinner is almost ready turns to me and asks – so we get to eat this food while we’re here. “Yes”, I whispered back. Not sure I meant it – “ So this is dinner and included in our cost?” – Again I answered in the positive. He says “Cool”, with a big grin. See you have to understand the guy. He said he would go, and it was fine (rolling my eyes at fine). I guess he thought it meant sitting through a …

North Market, Columbus Tour – My Impressions
December 1, 2009 | by DianaWhat ever I tell you about the North Market it won’t be enough. I have been there in the past, and always loved it. I’m jealous of my husband who works only a few blocks away and could venture out to this smorgasbord of flavor to get a different type of meal whenever he desires. So, when I was offered a tour of the North Market I decided to go for it.
The North Market is a public market on Spruce Street, just a few blocks north of Nationwide Arena. It is filled with merchants, in individual market stalls. Kind of an indoor open air market. Dave Wilbe, the executive director of North Market gave us a brief background of the North Market and a tour of the building. Dave is very personable and seemed to be a go to kind of guy that all the market owners and workers would call out to and let know they needed something, or had something nice to share with him.
