Yams & Chard

Written by Diana - May 10, 2009 8 Comments

I had Yams I wanted to use before they went bad, and Chard out in the garden starting to take over and go to seed.  So I put together a dish using both.  My lovely daughter took one look and said – “What are we frikken vegans?  Where’s the meat?”  Sorry guys, this is a meatless meal, but it turned out very delicious.  I like maple syrup, but didn’t want it overly sweet, so I used Maple Syrup wine instead.  My daughter even admitted it was good, and didn’t bother getting herself a meat sandwich. Lots of great vitamins and nutrition in this meal.

Yams & Chard Ingredients:

Directions:

Rinse and tear up chard.  Combine chard and yams in steamer and steam for about 10 minutes.  Heat up oil in large pan.  Saute shallots and garlic until soft. Dump in yams and chard plus seasonings. Heat up a little and serve.  It was pretty darn good.

Had to come look and see what you had made with the yams. I am onboard with all the ingredients except the chard. I have never had it and so I’m not sure about it. Warm green leafy vegetables are not always my favorite though – but I need to try to find ways to prepare them that I like since they are so good for you. Maybe I will give this one a try :-)

I never mixed the two until I came up with this, and it turned out well. I recommend it. We’re swimming in Chard right now, so I’m doing lots of recipes with Chard. It goes well in a lot of meals.

I tried this except I added vinegar instead of the maple syrup wine, and it was great! …Oh, and I also added lot of red pepper flakes to give it a little kick!

My mother in law loves vinegar in lots of recipes, so she might enjoy your changes a lot.
